Common questions
How do I open Stowpad?
Press ⌘⌃⇧V from any app, or click the Stowpad icon in the menu bar. The panel is designed for arrow-key navigation and fast paste.
How do I capture text or a table from my screen?
Press ⌘⌃⇧T, then select a region. Stowpad reads it locally with Apple Vision. If it finds a table, you can review it as Markdown, CSV, TSV or LaTeX before copying or saving.
How do I pick a colour from the screen?
Press ⌘⌃⇧P, then click a pixel. Stowpad copies the sRGB value and does not save a screenshot.
Why does Stowpad ask for Screen Recording permission?
macOS requires that permission to read the screen area you select for OCR or colour picking. Stowpad uses the image locally and does not save it as a screenshot file.
Where is my clipboard history stored?
On this Mac, encrypted with a key in your login Keychain. Stowpad does not operate a cloud sync or cloud-model service for clipboard content.
What are protected apps?
Apps you choose whose copied contents should be hidden. Their clips are redacted, require Touch ID or your Mac password to paste, and are excluded from Smart Features.
Does search still work without Smart Features?
Yes. Keyword and structured search remain available. Smart Features add encrypted local indexes, semantic ranking, Related results and optional on-device answers.
Can Stowpad render LaTeX and colours?
Yes. Recognised LaTeX renders as maths, while hex and rgb colour clips display their actual swatch. Code, links and tables also receive type-specific previews.
How do I delete everything?
Use Clear History in Stowpad’s preferences. This permanently removes saved clips, encrypted attachments and smart metadata, and also clears the system pasteboard. A scheduled or on-close clear leaves Locked History in place; only Clear All Clipboard History removes it.
What is included in Free, and what does Pro add?
Free keeps the newest 30 clips usable, with keyword search, rich previews, pins, screen text and colour picking. Older clips stay encrypted in Locked History and can still be exported. Pro adds unlimited history, smart search and on-device questions, table capture, collections, tags and rules, conversions, writing actions and citations. It is an annual App Store subscription with a 14-day trial and no account.
How do I export my history?
Use Export in Settings › General. Export requires Touch ID or your Mac password, and can be saved as CSV, plain text or JSON. The file you save is not encrypted by Stowpad.
How do citations work?
Stowpad recognises a DOI, arXiv id or ISBN on this Mac and can format a citation without a network. Pressing Look Up sends that identifier, and nothing else, to doi.org. Lookup stays off until you agree, and it never runs in the background.
Does Stowpad sync across Macs?
No. Clipboard history stays on this Mac. There is no iCloud or other cloud sync for clips.
What is Ollama doing in Stowpad?
Ollama is an optional local model you can choose instead of Apple Intelligence. It runs as a separate process on this Mac, requires an explicit disclosure, and cannot be pointed at a remote host. Clipboard content still does not leave this Mac.
